A few summers ago I was on a beach in photoshoot shape. Lean. Veins on the abs. My kid was in the water in front of me. My wife was watching us from her chair. I just fucking stood there. No energy to throw him around. Head full of macros, of food I'd already eaten that day, of food I'd let myself eat at dinner if I'd earned it. He asked me something. I didn't really hear it. For years I'd been doing this work to help men climb out of the depleted body. The tired one. The soft one. The one with nothing left for the wife or the kid at the end of the day. Standing on that beach I figured out I was one of them. Just leaner. It was never about lean. Most men think it is. I did too. You tell yourself it's about looking better. Having more energy. Some confidence back. That's all true and it's not the real thing. The real thing is the noise. The noise the mirror starts in the morning. The story that runs all day in the back of your head - that your body is proof your worth is failing. That your discipline sucks. That if you could just get this thing in line, the rest of your life would quiet down. So you go hard. You go to prove you've still got it. Some men crash. Some make it across the line. I made it across. The noise wasn't gone. It was just about food now. I couldn't sit through a restaurant meal without negotiating it. I planned extra cardio while my son was asking me something. My wife was getting less of me because my libido was almost gone. The twenty-somethings at the beach asked me how I smashed my abs but that didn't mean shit to my kid. I was missing the point of it all. There's a place a few clicks back.Lean enough that you walk into a room without flinching. Energy in you to throw your kid in the air and want to do it again ten minutes later. Peace with food. Full after a meal. No story afterwards about being good or bad. A body that's excited for your wife. That's where it works. Not magazine-photoshoot lean. A few clicks back from it. You don't have years.I went too lean and learned what too lean costs. I came back from it. I'm not going back over that line. You don't have years to figure this out. Most men don't. Your kids are getting older. Your wife already noticed. Your body has been talking to you for a while now. When I work with a guy, that's what we build. Training designed for his schedule, feeding his athletic nature. Nutrition supporting his energy needs and life satisfaction. A read on his body so accurate he doesn't need arbitrary rules to live by. The look comes with it. The noise quiets down. I'm in the water with my kid now. My wife gets the guy she married. P.S. If you're a former-athlete founder chasing leaner thinking it'll quiet the noise in your head - it won't. Thirty minutes, we find the place that actually does: cal.com/bartcagara/discovery-call |
