Why habits fail


Everyone talks about building habits when you're trying to lose weight.

It's backwards.

Try establishing rock-solid habits while you're in a deficit - away from the food that used to give you comfort and stress relief. Good luck.

You're not in the best physical state. Which means you're not in the best mental state. You're not emotionally neutral about trying new behaviors. You're fighting your own biology.

Here's what actually works.

Build the habits first. Before the deficit.

Go-to protein sources. Minimally processed carbs. Fruits and veggies. Water for hydration. Daily walking - not for calories, but so you start to understand how movement affects your mood, stress, satiety.

You're not losing weight yet. You're building the foundation.

Then you start stripping away the non-essentials. A little less oil here. No skin on the chicken. Two tablespoons less rice.

You give it a few days. Did the scale move? Good. That's your new baseline.

No keto. No forced fasting. No revolutionary changes. Just tiny adjustments to an already solid system.

This is how you get to know your body. This is how you recognize what a tiny deficit actually feels like. This is how you make it sustainable - and sometimes even easy.

This is what I did with Brian.

Former CEO, now a full-time consultant. On the road constantly. Athlete in college but lost it all when work took over. Quick bites. Stress snacks. Next thing you know, you're in your 50s, 80 lbs above where you should be.
